A stitch in time
Choosing the right KPIs is easy. Looking at them on schedule is the work.
Read articleMost owners I meet have an accountant who files returns and a bookkeeper who records what happened. The strategic financial work, the proactive tax planning, the cash-flow picture that actually informs decisions: that’s the gap I built this practice to close.
I’m Buzz Rose, CPA, and I’ve worked with small-business owners in the Pittsburgh area for over 25 years. I started my career at an international accounting firm serving small businesses and high-net-worth executives, and saw how often the small owners were the ones putting everything on the line. I left to build my own CPA practice so I could work for the people doing the building. I’m a Duquesne grad with a master’s from Robert Morris.
I also wrote Napkin Math, a book about how a napkin, a pen, and a calculator can help service-business owners make more and work less. Outside the office, I’m married with a son, I coach youth hockey, and I do a fair amount of travelling with the family.
I start by getting clear on what’s actually happening in the numbers. I look at the books, the tax picture, and the cash situation, then come back with the handful of things worth tackling first.
From there I build the financial infrastructure the business has been missing: a working cash forecast, a real tax plan, and reporting you can actually use. The services get sized to the business, not bolted on from a template.
The work then settles into a rhythm: regular check-ins, quarterly tax reviews, and a phone you can pick up when something real lands. I stay as your Fractional CFO, not a consultant who delivers a deck and disappears.
When tax decisions, cash calls, and growth choices land in one conversation, the planning gets better and the surprises get smaller. Here is what working together looks like day to day: I’m right beside you on the financial side, not handing down a report from outside.
